In countries like South Africa race walking is huge and walkers race parallel to the runners, with top walkers also receiving prices, just like top runners. I ran with a number of people with gps who reckoned the first half was slightly short (400m or so) - the only weak point of the route/marshalling was around Yas Marina where we had to run on the grass, but it wasn't clear where to go. Coming back to the road at Yas it wasn't clear that we were to run on the side road rather than rejoin the main road.”

“Fantastic race & water park fun! - Enjoyed the course, only concern was the that the finish line was confusing with the merging of the 10K race runners. Many of them were walking in groups along the last few kilometers and as a runner, weaving around them was a bit disconcerting. Going into the finish, it wasn't clear to me if there were separate paths for the 10K and half marathon runners. Afterwards I realized that the finish was the same for both groups. I suppose I should have known that, but I felt like I needed a big sign that said "half marathoners' this way!" That being said, overall, it was a fantastic event. Thanks for all the hard work that went into organizing the run! Loved the day at the water park afterwards!”

In future I think I would drive to the event rather than stay at hotel. As there was also a loud party. On the whole the run itself was excellent but my inexperience and lack of planning my own supplies was a great learning point. The veterans will already know this. ”

Having the support stations open (or at least start to open) the water cups would really help. Also it would have been great to know that the lockers provided weren't for the whole day. That way we could have got in early and purchased our locker tokens and avoided the queue. Thanks again! ”

“Outstanding organization - Like all events organized by the Abu Dhabi Striders, this race is great. The course is not particularly scenic or exciting, but the organizers do the best with what they have. Every other aspect is outstanding: communications, stations, volunteers, start / finish organization, quality of t-shirt (thanks Saucony) and medal, and other freebees. This is the only race I have ever participated in that has a (very substantial) breakfast included after the race, which is a very pleasant touch. This year, the free entry to Yas Waterworld was an incredible goodie. Thanks and kudos to the Striders for their stellar organization!”

“Nearly there - First with the good: Great package with waterpark facilities and entry, musicians were a good touch, start was well organised, plenty of free drinks at the end. Now for the improvements: Route marking could have been better, at the marina I had to question the marshall as to which way to go as it was really unclear. If the finish is to be mixed with the 10km runners then perhaps a long open straight might be better as the front half runners got caught up with the 10km runners and a clear line would have helped.”

“A nice run with the bonus of water park entry - A nice run around Yas. Use of showers and toilets in the water park was a huge bonus. Good medals and nice towels. Entry to the water park made the cost good value. Only issue was the HUGE queue for breakfast, this needs to be rectified before next year - and please include water with breakfast too. Sadly we missed the presentations due to queuing. Sports drink at all aid stations would be a nice touch.”

“Cracking day out - As a whole package, this was a great day out. Using a facility like Yas Waterworld is a huge bonus and was particularly welcomed by those of us travelling from the Northern Emirates. The fact that entry was included was even better! Breakfast was great, but the queue was painful - I don't think people would have minded if there was less choice but more stations to reduce the wait. Plus for me was the number of times the course looped back on itself - a good opportunity for teammates ahead to cheer you on.... and then return the favour to those behind! For me, the T-Shirt was the best design from an event this year. Thanks to Saucony for that and the free flip-flops!”

“Much better than previous years - After having participated in this event 3 times now. I have to say it has improved a lot this year. The course itself was much better. Before there was too much going back on yourself with loops inside the course and I found it quite boring but this time the start in Yas Waterworld and the layout meant that it was nicely laid out and no part of the course was boring. The water stations were great. The small waters were great for drinking on the move instead of bottles which are cumbersome. They were easy to puncture and drink from. Also the gu give away at 10km was well appreciated. The positioning also was good for all the stations. My only gripe for this event was the bus from the hotel. They really screwed that up. They should have given priority to half marathon runners over 10km runners on the 5:45 bus as people were left standing as the bus was full and it didn't return back until 6:25!! We then had to run an extra km to start the race 7 minutes late. Thankfully they kept the start line open for us as they were in the process of closing it. All in all though well organised and put together.”

“It was ok - Sorry but i have many comments on this Race. 1) When we arrived only one toilet was open and there was big queue. later allowed us to go inside bu the time so many people came there. 2) At 16.5k there was a right turn at that time one truck was turning i tried to wave and stop but he just rushed and no one was there from Marshal side to take care. 3) When i finished the run i was asking for cold water but no cold water was available. 4) After running 21K standing in Big Queue in hot sun for breakfast was not a good idea 5) I know i am bad runner but by the time i come in Prize ceremony was half the way through. 6) I came back and i was Dehydrated i was but i didn't knew whom to contact. Please keep medical facility till the complete event finish. Make people aware of there location. Thanks ”

“Great, but needs toilets. - Seriously, this event was amazing. Well run, well attended, pretty course. The whole enchilada. What I feel it needs though is toilets at some point around the course. I know that toilets cost a lot to bring in, BUT we ran past two sets of toilets that were already in place - The parklands and as we passed the concert space on the right side of Ferrari world. Why? My running partner actually soiled herself in her wait for a toilet (I was the guy who saw fit to run across the finish line without a shirt on... not because I am "nude running guy" but because I had given my shirt to my running mate so she could hide her embarrassment.) She was mortified, and rightly so - particularly as we had run past two sets of perfectly good, but locked, toilet blocks. Even if the situation wasn't as dramatic as the one I am describing here - the reality is that guys can find a discreet tree to hide behind, for the girls it is another issue entirely. Particularly here in the middle east. APart from the toilet thing, I loved the course and its execution, and am looking forward to next year's event.”

Comments re: improvements would be a board marking directions where the 10k and 1/2 split (even though the marshals were great there) and a better definition of the finishing straight. It was my first YAS run and I didn't realize the tickets for spectators needed to be purchased beforehand. Making this clear on the premier sight or via email after registration would be great to eliminate the guess work. Apologies if it was made available but I truly don't remember reading about this. Overall amazing event! Can't wait until next year! ”

“Great event that just keeps getting better. - Better signage/marshalling needed where the route takes you around the back of Stars n'Bars; it had a few of us confused (not used to being near the front). Aid stations were excellent as usual and what support there was, was enthusiastic. Breakfast was absolutely fabulous - best food I have seen at any event, anywhere; and the support from the already busy Yas WaterWorld staff was creditable. The route is excellent, i just hope it was an accurate 21.1k. I think that if you use this template for next year, your event will sell out in a heartbeat. Well done Striders.”

“A great run - Another great event from the Striders. Interesting course (or as interesting as you can get on Yas Island) with lots of support from marshals and spectators and they even managed to find a few gentle climbs. Nice touch linking the 10K and Half Marathon for some of the course. Only negatives were an apparent lack of water at the finish and the long queue for breakfast in Waterworld - even having someone walking down the line with water / juice would have made a massive difference when we really needed it. ”

“Simply Outstanding! - One of the best event of the season if not the best! Very well communications throughout the coming days of the race, everything was clear. The pack collection was great multiple collection points, even Dubai, only drawback they didn't have a half marathon shirt for me :( the pack also included Yas WaterWorld entry and breakfast. Start/Finish organization was very well, even reading out some names of finishers at the end. Marshalling and volunteers (guitarist and band crew) really made a difference, great job to all! Timing results were promptly updated online. The course was very pleasant around the island, Ferrari World... The medal was nice and the event giveaways very generous which included towels, sprays, pain patches.. Breakfast buffet was nice to have and lots of refreshments along the way with plenty GU gels, Gatorade, water, sponges.. All in all very well for the value for money!”

“Great race but last year was slightly better - The race was greatly organized with lots of passion behind it. But a lot of runners stayed in the nearby hotels and to get to the start one relied on the bus transport as communicated before. We showed up quiet early downstairs and yet had to wait 30minutes without making it to the start line in time before the HM started. It is probably not the pre-race environment one wants to be placed in. Unfortunately the timing after the race did not work in favour of those wanting to get back to the hotel in order to be refreshed for the breakfast. The quality of food was a bit disappointing too. Obviously, an event catered for this many people on a budget will not allow for gourmet surprises but having cheese and sausage sit in the boiling sun with no shade or cover is not making it any more appetizing. Overall though, We would come again and we have enjoyed today's race very much. Every now and then, we just thought back at the race organized last year.”

Also appreciated the commentator shouting out names at the end. Measured the Half Marathon course 400m short but I don't think too many people will complain about that! A few tiny areas for improvement: the breakfast queue was far too long; better signage to the start (once you get onto Yas) would be appreciated; and I would have liked the sports drink a little sooner, but these are small things. Congratulations to Steve and the team; all your hard work has paid off. Special thanks to the AD Striders who came all the way to Dubai Striders to hand out bibs - much appreciated. ”

“Great course, great organization. - I enjoyed this race so much. I preferred the course this year to last year. It was much nicer to have the hotel hill in the middle of the course than at the end. Thank you organizers for that! The towel at the end was so welcome. The shower facilities, lockers and ample toilets a big improvement from last year. Breakfast loads of healthy choices. 10k participants were lucky to have first pickings because the queue later was very long. Thank you to all the organizers. A great turn out. “Really good event except for some route confusion - Overall a really good event, everything was really well done, except some of the places around the course didn't have marshals and also didn't have signage on where to go so i got confused but luckily there where ither runners in front. but overall really enjoyed it and will definitely be back next year”

It offers easy parking, lockers, showers, clean toilets etc etc. Nice breakfast and fun to be in Yas Waterworld. The course is not great for sight seeing, but fast :-) My compliments to Steve and his team for this great execution !!! you put a high benchmark here, see you next year.”

“Nice one! - Great race, enjoyed the change of course and adding the Yas water world at the end was an excellent addition. The only issue I had was my legs were too tiered to keep walking up the stairs for the rides! The volunteers were probably the best water hander outers I have ever encountered on a race - thanks. ”

“A fun route! - It was an overall fun route. Some water bottles during the breakfast would have been nice. Breakfast was somewhat chaotic and after running, waiting another 45 minutes for breakfast was a little hard. The volunteers as always are AMAZING.hates off to them”

Well organised and so nice to have proper bathrooms at the start (but where were the toilets at the 13km mark -no where to be found????). The volunteers along the course should be given a medal -always so friendly and helpful. Don't change the course at all for next year!!”
