This event is intended for people new to desert hiking/running. In order that people are eligible for longer distances, you need to successfully complete a 10km desert challenge BEFORE you an do a 20km desert challenge. In order for you to do a 40km desert challenge, you need first to do a 20km desert challenge. If you did the desert challenge this May (2012), then you have already pre-qualified for all distances in future events (there will be some!). Having said that, anyone can enter this event and is welcome to do so!



The format will be teams of two or three (due to demand for a three person team) (18 years and above). There will be a Start/Finish area and two checkpoints. The course will triangular and approximately 10km in distance. The dunes are medium height (5-10 meters) and also areas where it is quite flat.



Teams will need the following:

One GPS device (handheld or watch type) - per team

One whistle - per team

One headtorch or handheld torch - per person

One Camelpak or method of carrying water - per person

One fully charged phone



Teams will not be permitted to start if they do not have any of the above.



Teams can start anytime between 6:30 pm and 8 pm. Teams are allowed two and half hours in which to complete the course. If you are a slower or hiking type, then please start earlier. If you faster, then please start later.



There will be refreshments and ice at the start/finish area and the checkpoints.



Teams must be aware of need for safety. Please use the whistle to attract attention should you need. Use the light/torch to make yourself seen if there is any dune bashing going on - keep to the tops of the dunes so you can see vehicles and if a vehicle is close by, flash the light at the vehicle to show the driver you are there.



There are no prizes, T shirts or anything else - it is a pure and simple desert challenge.



You are advised to use proper desert ( Raidlite ) gaiters which can be bought at Adventure HQ - you will also need to get them stitched onto the shoes you intend to use. Registrations will close either when 50 teams is reached or two days before the event.



Exact details - GPS co-ordinates, a map showing the start/finish and course etc will be e-mailed to all one week before the event.
